Waking up and going through your morning eye makeup routine every day is a drag! Eyelash extensions are a great way to bypass that and get some extra time either in bed or out.

Although extensions can last for a long time, there are some things that can seriously reduce their lifespan.

1. Avoid Heat and Moisture

Humid environments are detrimental to the adhesive that binds your extensions to your lashes. 

The first 24 hours are crucial to the curing process of your new lashes. So, while you can still have a shower or bath, be wary of the amount of steam present in the room.

Saunas and hot tubs should be avoided altogether, at least for the first day or two. A day off from the gym wouldn’t hurt either.

Although eyelash extensions are made to be heat resistant, extreme heat can cause them to crimp or singe.

If you’re cooking dinner, or if you’re a grill master, take care not to stand too close to heat sources.

2. Look After Your Natural Lashes

Natural eyelash care is essential for extensions. The healthier your natural lashes are, the better your extensions will look. 

Taking care of your natural lashes also means you’ll be able to get more extensions too, making them look fuller and last longer.

3. No Need for Mascara

A common mistake people make with eyelash extensions is using mascara on them. Mascara contains oil and wax, which breaks down the adhesive of the extensions.

The added strain of pulling and tugging on the extensions with a mascara brush can also weaken the bond between them and your natural lashes.

Any oil-based makeup or cleansers are not suitable products for eyelash extensions. Any lash extension supplies you use should be water or gel-based.

4. No Touchy!

It’s tempting to touch and fiddle with your lash extensions in the mirror, you want to make sure they’re sitting perfectly. Don’t!

Your skin has lots of natural oils in it that have the same effect on the adhesive bond as mascara and other oil-based products. Taking care of eyelash extensions sometimes means leaving them alone.

If you have to adjust them at all, you can use a clean spoolie to lightly align them, but avoid touching them with your hands altogether.

5. Keep Them Clean

After the first day or two, when the adhesive has completely cured, you’ll want to keep your extensions clean. Removing dirt and oils at the end of the day is going to make them last much longer.

Oil-free eyelash extension products are available for gentle daily cleansing, or you can use diluted baby shampoo. Be sure to remove any makeup first using oil-free wipes.

Gently does it when washing your lashes. Any vigorous scrubbing can damage the bond.
