In the 1940s, the focus of boudoir photography and art was on pin up girls. Pin up models were fashion models, glamour models, and actresses whose photos were meant to be “pinned up” onto the wall.

While most of us think of the 40s and 50s when we think of pin up girls, the pin up girl actually came into being in 1887. It was in this year that Charles Gibson created the Gibson Girl through his artwork. The Gibson Girl was characterized by sizeable breasts, a tiny waist, dark hair, and a swan-like neck. 

Other artists followed in Charles Gibson’s footstep, and soon, the concept of boudoir photography emerged. 

Boudoir photography had another big evolution during the 1970s. It was during this decade that photography began to carve its plate in the professional art world. Women began appearing in photographs and artwork without bras or panties. 

Despite the idea that this photography had artistic purposes, many people could not get past the nudity factor, and for a long time, boudoir photography was considered glorified pornography by many.
