Armando Broja was deemed to be in an offside position – even though he was in his own half.
Rules state that it is not possible for a player to be offside in their own half, so Pochettino was furious about the decision.
And his response led to him being penalised.
Fans raged at the outcome, with one person tweeting: “Broja is offside here apparently. He’s in his own half. I want to laugh. But it’s genuinely not even funny. It’s pathetic.”
Another added: “And they had the gall to book Poch when he called it out. Unbelievable.”
A third wrote: “Embarrassing officiating.”
While a fourth fan commented: “I can’t lie, this Chelsea Vs Brighton match has to be one of the worst refereeing I’ve seen in recent times. Almost like the officials were working without a rule book.”
Several refereeing decisions raised eyebrows during Chelsea’s Carabao Cup clash with Brighton, with both sets of fans feeling aggrieved.
Blues midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu escaped a red card following a reckless challenge on Carlos Baleba.
Nicolas Jackson, who scored the decisive goal shortly after half time, was then denied a second later in the game after he was deemed offside.
However, replays appeared to show the striker was onside when played through by Cole Palmer.
VAR was not in use throughout the game, which frustrated many supporters.
Chelsea went on to win 1-0 thanks to a second-half strike from Jackson.
