Former President Donald Trump’s valet appeared has pleaded not guilty in the classified documents case in a Miami federal courthouse.
Walt Nauta arrived at the James Lawrence King Federal Justice Building on Thursday morning to face charges that he assisted Trump in hiding classified records that the ex-president took to Mar-a-Lago after leaving the White House.
Nauta’s lawyer Stanley Woodward entered Nauta’s plea on his behalf. His attorney in Florida, Sasha Dadan, also appeared alongside him. Nauta’s arraignment took only a few minutes and the three then went into a conference room without commenting to reporters.
Upon arriving at the courthouse, Nauta did not speak to reporters but smiled. He wore sunglasses and a navy suit.
Nauta faces six counts of conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding and concealing documents and false statements.
Prosecutors claim that he hid boxes of records as Trump’s lawyers were looking for classified material that the Justice Department was seeking. Nauta also lied to investigators in an interview, according to prosecutors.
Nauta first appeared in court alongside Trump on June 13 but was not arraigned because he did not have a lawyer representing him who could practice in Florida.
He was set to be arraigned on June 27 but it was postponed for the same reason.
