Originally billed as a miniseries, Vigil is returning for a second season.
That probably has to do with the numbers as the first season gripped over 13 million viewers.
Season 1 was the UK’s most-watched new drama launch since Bodyguard in 2018. It also won the International Emmy and secured a BAFTA nomination for the Best Drama Series.
Additionally, the show has a stellar cast that includes Coronation Street star Suranne Jones, Game of Thrones actor Rose Leslie and Line of Duty’s Martin Compston.
The first look pictures confirm that Suranne and Rose are returning as their fan-favourite characters Amy Silva and Kirsten Longacre in the upcoming season, which will hit screens later this year.
In a brand-new investigation, their pair “look to the skies as they enter the secret world of drone warfare to catch a killer.”
Following multiple deaths at a Scottish weapons test, Silva and Longacre are tasked with finding out the cause. Entering the closed ranks of the air force in Scotland and the Middle East, the pair face the deadly warfare of tomorrow as they fight for their own uncertain future.
The newly released pictures show a first look at the scenes viewers can expect.
One shot shows the detectives working together to diffuse a tense situation.
Another teases what’s instore for at the military airbase, with Silva looking cautiously at a female soldier in the driving seat of a car.
A third snap shows that Silva will be transported out of Scotland, and she really will be fight for her life according to this dramatic pic which depicts Suranne’s character with a bruised face behind a metal railing.
Meanwhile, Rose’s character looks to be in trouble herself in a snap that shows her sprinting through the woods alone.
The drama series, which was filmed in Scotland and Morocco, will consist of six hour-long episodes, the same as the first season.
As previously announced, Vigil’s second season also stars Gary Lewis (His Dark Materials) who returns as DSU Robertson.
Suranne, Rose and Gary are also joined by new cast members Romola Garai (Becoming Elizabeth), Dougray Scott (Crime), Amir El-Masry (SAS Rogue Heroes), David Elliot (The Liberator), Chris Jenks (Sex Education), Tommy Sim’aan (Doctors), Oscar Salem (House of the Dragon), Jonathan Ajayi (Noughts + Crosses) and Hiba Medina in her first major TV role.
Behind the scenes, Tom Edge is back as showrunner, with episodes directed by Andy De Emmony (The Last Kingdom) and Josh Agnew (Outlander).
