Do you want to know how to become a better swimmer?
Swimming is an excellent exercise for us. It’s perfect for you if you don’t want to break a sweat but still enjoy a good cardio workout. It keeps our body cool as the heart does a workout.
Visiting the pool or the beach is a great recreational activity. However, some of us aren’t confident in our swimming skills, so how are we supposed to get better at swimming?
These are the five easy steps for you to become a better swimmer. Read what we have below and learn what you can do to improve your swimming technique.
1. Improve Your Core
Which should you do first, weight training or swimming? Do swimming first as this will help you gauge what are the areas you need to improve. Also, swimming is a good warm-up for the body before starting a workout.
Develop your core; this means your abs, hips, glutes, and back. A developed core will improve your posture and balance in the water. If your core is stable, your body resistance and swimming performance will improve.
2. Breathe the Right Way
We all know how to breathe and it’s a task that we do automatically. For swimming, though, it’s a conscious task that we cannot mess up. Not only will we take in water in our lungs, but breathing the wrong way also affects our swimming performance.
Before swimming it’s important to take a deep breath. When swimming, always inhale outside the water and exhale underwater. The latter part is always difficult, but with enough practice, you will get used to it.
3. Keep Your Body in A Straight Line
Lifting your head above the waterline will push the water ahead of you and your body will start to sink. This will create unnecessary water resistance. Align your body with your shoulder and hips to improve your swimming technique.
Unlike gyms that have mirrors, swimming pools don’t have them. A good swimming tip is to have a friend take a video of you to see if you are keeping a straight body while you’re swimming.
4. Kick from the Hip
While swimming, practice keeping your legs close to each other, then kick from the hip. Keep your legs straight with a slight bend on the knee. Doing this is a great way to propel yourself while you’re underwater.
5. Keep on Swimming
All the steps mentioned are practices that are difficult to do at first. Don’t worry, though, keep on practicing them and you will improve your performance.
However, if you think you need a challenge, take a master swimmers program. It’s a good way to enhance your swimming skills. Combine it with viper fins and you can step up your technique even more.
