Methods for Cleaning Solar Panels

Solar panels should be cleaned regularly, but there is no definitive answer on how often they need to be cleaned. It generally depends on the location, tilt of the panels, local environment, and amount of area covered by the unit.

In dusty or arid climates, cleaning the panels once a month or bimonthly is suggested, whereas soiled areas need less frequent cleaning. Here are some methods for cleaning and installing solar panels.

Use Mild Soap Solution

Solar panels should be cleaned every few months to keep them free from dust, dirt, bird droppings, and other debris. A mild soap solution is an effective and gentle way to clean once you decide on going solar.

To cut streaks and avoid damage, use only gentle cleaning solutions such as mild soap diluted with water, or a vinegar-water mixture. It helps to dissolve the dirt or bird droppings that may have accumulated on the solar panels and may help prevent any unwanted marks or blotches.

Additionally, use only a soft cloth and clean the panels with a circular motion to protect them from scratches. If a regular hose is used to clean the panels, ensure that the pressure is low and only spot-clean following the circular pattern, using the least pressure necessary.

Use Soft Clothes or Brushes

Solar panels should be cleaned at least two to four times a year for optimal efficiency. Before cleaning your solar panels, you should inspect each module for signs of dirt and debris.

If necessary, use soft cloths or brushes to remove any foreign material from the surface, and then rinse with clean water. Additionally, check the wiring to make sure that no corrosion has set in over time.

Cleaning solar panels more often in cases of dust, ashes, or debris on the panels, will benefit the amount of energy generated and keep them in good condition. Generally, dirt and dust won’t affect the energy output until it is obscuring between 10-25% of the panel’s surface.

To tell if your panels need cleaning, look at them from a distance and note any irregularities that occupy the face of the panel. If there are visual obstructions like dirt and dust, bird droppings, or tree sap, you should consider giving the panels a thorough cleaning. Make sure to use a soft brush and cleaning solution to avoid potential damage.
