The British Royal Family or, simply put, the royals, are loved by many across the globe. As part of a new wave from each arm of the household, many individuals within the royal family are looking at how they can charm new generations; US News thinks Prince Harry’s tell-all memoir will be the next big hit in that regard. The memoir, which is touted to be more personal than ever, will tap into something that the public of today value over everything – honesty, and integrity. Small changes in how the royals have operated give a hint as to just how much they’re following this trend – even in their style.
Down-to-earth jewelry
The royals have a gigantic jewelry collection that is the envy of the world over. It’s not something typically associated with being down-to-earth, but the choices they’ve made in jewelry selection has contributed to this image. One focus they’ve relied upon is the reusing of antique pieces, or pieces with a significant sentimental edge – for the family and for fans around the world. A great example is the reusing of Diana’s engagement ring for Kate Middleton. As Insider magazine asserts, Diana was likely one of the most popular royals ever introduced to the world. Reusing an older item, and one that has a link to that reputation, has been a subtle but powerful way for the royals to strengthen their connection with the world.
The mass appeal
Royal engagements are a tightly monitored and scheduled thing. They’re often in certain environments, or in tandem with charities sponsored by the Royal Trust. When Harry and Meghan went on to Oprah, they bridged a gap. Whether their views are agreeable or not, the medium they used, the mass media, is something that has helped to enamor them – if they’re good enough to be interviewed on Oprah, anyone can be. This, and the frank admission by Meghan Markle concerning her health, helped to endear that couple to the world to an even greater degree.
Mental health
Mental health conditions are at the scale that they can be considered a pandemic. The World Health Organization estimates that 20% of the world’s population have some form of mental illness – an astonishing number. Practically every person on earth will know somebody who has faced the challenges that mental health conditions pose. Meghan Markle’s admission of mental health conditions, even her position of relative privilege and power, did huge work in breaking down stigma and other existing barriers. Mental health is perhaps the most universal and basic of stories that can be told – it impacts people in every corner of the globe. By taking a lead and looking to encourage people to speak and feel comfortable, just as Diana did, the royals are doing important work.
