CELTIC manager Ange Postecoglou is TOO GOOD to stay in Scotland and will take a massive managerial step into one of the top jobs in England’s Premier League.
That’s the view of former Hoops player Paul Slane, who rates Postecoglou’s managerial abilities so highly that he believes he can go on to replace Jurgen Klopp as manager of Liverpool.
Ange Postecoglou was linked with the recent job vacancy at Brighton
Slane, who also played for the likes of Motherwell, Ayr United and Clyde, was discussing the Australian’s future alongside fellow former Celtic man and Open Goal podcast host Si Ferry as well as ex-Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara.
Slane told Grosvenor Sport: “I think Postecoglou’s going to be the next Liverpool manager, I really do.
“I think he’ll be the next Liverpool manager when Jurgen Klopp decides to go or Liverpool decide to part with him.
“Who else takes the Liverpool job after Klopp?
“At times in this season’s Champions League game against Real Madrid, the European champions, Celtic were unbelievable, so I think Ange Postecoglou is good enough to be the next Liverpool manager.
“If people think Graham Potter is better than Postecoglou, and he can get the Chelsea job, then they’re wrong…”
Slane added: “Sadly I think Postecoglou will be too good to stick around at Celtic for the next four or five years.
“He’ll want the Premier League, the top teams, the money… I think Ange will want to go and face off against the world’s top managers week-in, week-out.
“So I think it’ll be hard for him to stay with Celtic. But come the first game of next season, I think he’ll still be managing Celtic.”
However, Ferry, who also played for the likes of Swindon, Portsmouth and Dundee, disagreed with Slane and feels Postecoglou could be at a new club as early as next season.
He said: “I think he’ll clean up domestically this season and, if he qualifies for the last 16 of the Champions League, which I think he will, I think he could be off at the end of the season.
“I don’t just rate him because he’s the Celtic manager, he really has got something about him, so I think it will be tough for Celtic to keep hold of him next year, I really do.”
Slane and Ferry also discussed Giovanni van Bronckhorst
The trio also discussed the future of Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst and were critical of the Dutchman.
Slane said: “I don’t think Van Bronckhorst will be at Rangers for too much longer either. If you can’t win the league at Rangers, you don’t stay there.
“Getting them to the Europa League final and in the Champions League has helped him so far, but in the league… a lot of the success last season in Europe was down to him, it was his tactics, the way he set up and changed things during matches, which was very impressive.
“He’s proved he’s a good manager, but you’ve got to win the league at Rangers and I don’t think he’s going to do that.”
Ferry added: “I think he’s a very good manager tactically, but what he’s not got for me is the charisma or personality to be a Rangers manager. That’s where I think there’s a disconnect with him.
“All the best managers have both sides to them. I wouldn’t look at him and think he inspires me, whereas with Steven Gerrard you’re looking across at him thinking, he’s inspired me.”
