A teacher has plead guilty to giving her students cupcakes that were laced with her then-husband’s sperm.
Cynthia Perkins, 36, used the sperm to ‘season’ the batch of pastries she gave to children at Westside Junior High School in Livingston, Louisiana, according to the Daily Express.
Perkins was set to begin her trial on Monday, but agreed to a plea deal hours before a jury was selected. As part of the deal, 68 charges were dismissed and Perkins agreed to testify against her ex-husband Dennis Perkins, a disgraced sheriff’s lieutenant.
‘Today, Cynthia Perkins admitted to her crimes and plead guilty in court,’ Attorney General Jeff Landry said.
‘She not only waived any right to appeal, and attempt to avoid conviction, but she also spared the victims from reliving her horrific crimes during this particular trial.’
Perkins was sentenced to one year in prison for the sperm-spiced cupcakes.
However, she has also been charged with sex crimes against children, including second-degree rape. She pleaded guilty to producing child pornography involving a child under 13 years old, one count of second-degree rape and one count of mingling harmful substance.
Perkins and her ex-husband were accused of sexually abusing a child together. She resigned from the high school after being arrested in 2019 and faced up to 72 years in prison, but that has been reduced to 41 years.
Her attorney, James Spokes, said they feel the plea deal ‘was the best decision’.
‘Cynthia decided this was in her best interest. She feels a lot of remorse over what’s happened. We side with her when she says this was the best decision she could make at this time,’ Spokes said.
‘This is not the kind of case where people are going home happy, but this was the best possible outcome.’
Meanwhile, her ex-husband faces 150 charges and has a trial date set in May.
‘We look forward to holding Dennis Perkins accountable for his crimes in the very near future,’ Landry said.
