DR Brennder has been notably absent from recent seasons of Stranger Things – but he could be set for a dastardly comeback.
The evil scientist horrified audiences back in the Netflix hit’s debut season when he subjected Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) to all manner of cruel experiements throughout her childhood.
Brenner was last seen in the secret lab where he was conducting research into biological engineering and superpowers – but his actual fate remained a mystery.
It was widely assumed that he was killed by the Demogorgon, though this never played out on screen.
Now Brenner actor Matthew Modine has hinted that the villain could return in the upcoming season 4 while addressing fan theories about the show.
“I love that the fans are trying to figure out where Dr. Brenner is, because we’re all wondering, you know, is he in the Upside Down?” he told NME.
“Did the Demogorgon drag him away? Is he going to re-emerge?” he went on.
“And the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, have said that unless you see a body, the character’s not dead – and obviously, we never saw Dr Brenner’s body.”
Even characters who have seemingly met their demise have been reincarnated as agents of the Upside Down, as was the cast in season 3, when Billy (Dacre Montgomery) harvested the people of Hawkins for the Mindflayer.
Modine also took the opportunity to defend to defend Brenner, claiming that for all his faults, at least he never murdered anyone.
“Dr. Brenner isn’t as bad as some of the fans think he is. What did he do that’s so bad?” he went on.
