US Army Staff Sergeant Keith Lewis, left, allegedly shot wife Sarah, dead three days before she was due to give birth
A soldier shot his heavily pregnant wife dead before turning the gun on himself in front of their three year-old daughter. Staff Sergeant Keith Lewis, 31, murdered his 34 year-old wife Sarah at their apartment on US Army’s Fort Bragg base in North Carolina on Sunday evening.
Sarah was just three days off from her due date when she was killed, and had been due to welcome her baby at Christmas. Her unborn baby was also killed in the shooting.
Lewis – who was previously charged with pointing a gun at Sarah in 2016 – is said to abused his wife when drunk. The previous charge against him was dismissed at Sarah’s request.
Sarah’s aunt Tammy De Mirza told WMBF: ‘It’s a complete shock. It’s like a horror movie.
‘This guy had PTSD. This happened two-and-a-half years ago, the exact same scenario. From what I understand, he drank, and when he drank, he lost it.
‘It wasn’t just the loss of Sarah but of a baby that’s fully formed and due in three days, and on top of that, I’m finding out she’s been in a relationship with years of abuse.
‘You feel guilty. What would you have done? Could I have stopped it in some way?’
De Mirza said Sarah, who had two children from a previous marriage, had worked as a paramedic before her wedding to Lewis.
She added: ‘I love her, and I refuse (for) the memory of her to be a victim. I’m not going to let her death be in vain.’
The Lewis’s three year-old daughter was unharmed by the shooting, and is now being cared for by relatives.
A US Army spokesman called the murder suicide an ‘absolute tragedy,’ and said help is available for servicemen and women and military partners who are suffering from domestic abuse.
