A man has been shot by American police after officers said he opened fire on them at a Christmas concert on the steps of a New York cathedral.
It is unclear if the gunman was killed but he is said to be in a critical condition following the incident, which left crowds running down the street screaming. Police say there is no indication that anyone else was hurt.
Shots rang out just before 4pm local time at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in Manhattan, as the choir performance came to end.
People were starting to walk away following the 45-minute event when a series of shots was heard, sending crowds running down the street screaming.
Officers who had been on hand to provide security for the event quickly moved in and shot the gunman, who police believe was armed with a rifle.
The gunman was wounded by officers, according to police and a Reuters photographer at the scene.
New York City Police Department spokesman Sergeant Edward Riley said the gunman had fired on police, but no officers were injured.
