A hospital patient has received a super-rare triple organ transplant that that gave him a new heart, kidney and lungs in one set of procedures.
Keith Baker, a 58-year-old veteran living in Salt Lake City, Utah, underwent the rare surgery on Wednesday at the University of Utah hospital, ABC 4 reported.
Baker was suffering from heart failure, kidney failure and liver failure, and the hospital asked him if he would consider receiving a triple organ transplant surgery.
The transplant program in the hospital had successfully performed a double-organ transplant surgery, so they felt that they were able to try for a triple transplant surgery.
The heart transplant came first, then the abdominal team came in and performed the liver transplant.
Baker was sent back to the intensive care unit for 8 hours, and then doctors successfully performed the kidney transplant.

Dr Craig Sellzman from University of Utah Health said that he didn’t think Baker ‘had a chance, but the guy has some level of resiliency.’
‘That maybe is his veteran roots, but he could not be denied and despite some of our initial pessimism, he proved us all wrong,’ Sellzman said. ‘He showed us a spirit of survival.’
Baker said that he put his faith in God, as well as the doctors and nurses that helped him recover.
‘I’ll even include the janitors cause everyone had a hand in what had happened,’ Baker said. ‘I wasn’t going to give up, they were right about that.’
He remained optimistic about the surgery and was happy to be able to spread a positive message on Veterans Day.
‘Anything is possible,’ he said. ‘Put your heart into it, don’t give up, go in with a good attitude. Don’t worry about the small stuff, that’s what everybody else gets paid to do. Just try and stay alive.’
Baker will be staying at the hospital for a few more months as he regains his physical stamina from the surgery.
This was Utah’s first ever triple organ transplant surgery performed in the state.
