NYPD Officer Adeed Fayaz Killed in Facebook Marketplace Robbery

The NYPD cop who was shot while trying to purchase a car from a seller on Facebook Marketplace has died from his wounds, police said.

The NYPD identified the victim as Officer Adeed Fayaz, who was a patrolman in South Brooklyn’s 66th Precinct. Fayaz, 26, was a five-year veteran of the force and is survived by his wife and two young children.

Fayaz was pronounced dead on Tuesday afternoon, three days after the botched robbery attempt in Brooklyn.

Fayaz’s widow and the couple’s two young sons were at his side when they made the decision to take him off life support. Hundreds of NYPD officers joined then Fayaz’s family to escort his body, draped in an NYPD flag, to the city medical examiner’s office.

Earlier on Tuesday, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell announced the arrest of Randy ‘Popper’ Jones, 38, for the attack. Charges against the suspect are currently pending.

Sewell said that after the shooting, Jones fled from the city to a motel room in Rockland County. ‘He fled, but he could not evade our reach. In less than 46 hours he was handcuffed by an NYPD detective assigned to the US Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force,’ Sewell said.

According to the NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig, Fayaz contacted a man selling a Honda Pilot on Facebook Marketplace for $24,000.

On the evening of February 4, Fayaz drove with his brother-in-law to East New York, Brooklyn in two separate cars.

According to Essig, Jones first asked the two men if they were carrying a gun. After they replied ‘no,’ Jones grabbed Fayaz in a headlock and pointed a gun at his head.

‘Police Officer Fayaz was able to break free, at which time the male fired, striking him in the head,’ Essig said.

The brother-in-law was able to grab Fayaz’s weapon and shoot back at the attempted robber at least six times. He then transported the wounded officer to Brookdale Hospital.

Detectives were able to identify Jones by tracking the car he then proceeded to flee in – which belonged to his mother.

Jones drove his mother’s car to a Department of Sanitation parking lot in Harlem, where he switched cars and took off with a woman and five young children between the ages of 6 months and 11 years.

A fugitive task force was able to track Jones as he fled further out of the city to a Days Inn motel in Nanuet, New York.

Essig also confirmed that the arresting officers in Rockland County used Officer Fayaz’s handcuffs when they detained him. ‘We wanted him to know what he did to that officer,’ Essig said. ‘I think it sends a powerful message.’
