Tornados damage homes

Officials reported a number of homes were damaged, roads were blocked by downed lines and tree branches were shredded by the strong winds.

Photos tweeted on social media showed downed trees, debris and damaged roofs and vehicles.

Which areas are affected?

Thunderstorms that spawned tornadoes moved through much of Iowa for hours Saturday with some of the most intense damage in the small Madison County community of Winterset.

Storms also caused damage in the Des Moines suburb of Norwalk and areas just east of Des Moines.

Parts of Vinton are experiencing structural damage, downed power lines, gas leaks, and more, according to KCRG.

Many have taken to Twitter to share photos of the damage left in the wake of the storms and tornadoes.

Thunderstorm warnings

A severe thunderstorm warning is now in effect for Dubuque, Jackson, and Jones Counties through 9pm local time, according to KWWL.

Search and rescue underway

Search and rescue operations are being conducted in Winterset, where “multiple deaths” have been reported, per KCCI 8.

The outlet is also reporting that the city of Winterset was not hit. The areas that sustained the most damage are rural.

Elsewhere, officials are tending to additional damage and power outages.

Severe weather hits the region

Severe weather hit the region late Saturday afternoon, affecting the Winterset and Norwalk areas.

Officials in Madison County confirmed at least one tornado has touched down.
