MEXICO CITY—A former Mexican defense minister was arrested by U.S. authorities on Thursday at the request of the Drug Enforcement Administration, senior Mexican officials said.
General Salvador Cienfuegos, who served as defense minister from 2012 to 2018 in the administration of former President Enrique Peña Nieto, was arrested upon arrival at a Los Angeles airport, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard wrote on Twitter.
Mr. Cienfuegos’s arrest was made at the request of the DEA, a senior Mexican government official said. Gen. Cienfuegos was traveling with his family, the official added.
