An elderly man who was let go after working for a sugar mill for more than three decades is accused of killing an employee who did not allow him to stay one more year. Felix Cabrera, 86, allegedly pulled a gun out and shot the victim several times when he was told ‘no’.
Cabrera was terminated from Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative in Belle Glade, Florida, on Friday after 31 years with the mill, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Cabrera was instructed to clock out for the last time between 10 and 11am.
However, Cabrera spoke with an employee at the mill asking to continue working for another year for financial reasons.
‘The victim replied, “NO,”‘ the sheriff’s office stated. ‘Cabrera became upset, pulled the gun out of his pocket and shot the victim several times, killing him.’
Sheriff’s deputies found the victim dead at the entrance of the building. They then found Cabrera, who was still armed with a handgun.
‘It appears to have been a planned event,’ the sheriff’s office tweeted.
Cabrera was charged with first-degree murder He was booked into Palm Beach County Jail, according to records, and is being held without bond.
His first court date was set for Saturday, but court records indicated that he did not appear.
Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative stated that they were ‘horrified and deeply saddened by the senseless violence’.
‘The victim was part of the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative family, and we are praying for the victim’s loved ones, as well as all our team members and growers,’ the cooperative said in a statement obtained by WPTV. ‘We will be there for one another in the days, weeks and months ahead.’
In addition, the organization thanked first responders and said it would continue to cooperate with law enforcement officials.
