However, life doesn’t stand still for everyone over the festive period and some will find themselves needing to travel.
If you’re thinking of taking a local trip, or need to head even further afield, does public transport run on Boxing Day?
Do buses run on Boxing Day?
Before we look at whether trains and buses run, it is important to note that if you live in a tier four or tier three area, you should avoid all non-essential travel.
If you can avoid leaving your home for anything other than an essential shop, for medical need or anything else on the list of exemptions, you should.
Buses tend to run most Boxing Days, but on a reduced service.
Across London, TFL buses will run on a Sunday service this Boxing Day.
Elsewhere, other bus companies like Arriva will likely run on a reduced service, though it’s always best to check your local area or route beforehand.
Do trains run on Boxing Day?
Very few services will be running on Boxing Day, with the exception of some airport transfer services, such as the Stansted Express and Heathrow Express.
If you need to travel, Megabus services will be running on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
A press release for the company states: ‘The company… will operate services every single day during the whole festive period, helping people travel across the country to enjoy seasonal festivities when other modes of transport are not running.

‘The low-cost coach operator will provide more than 1000 seats on its services on Christmas Day, operating a record 3,500miles and serving 28 locations across Scotland, England and Wales.
‘On all other days throughout Christmas and New Year, including New Year’s Day, megabus.com will operate a near-normal service on most routes across the UK, with only some minor changes to timetables.’
