A rescue cat who battled depression after his beloved owner died has found a happy new home with a lonely 91 year-old woman who is self-isolating. The nine year-old kitty called Tigger missed his late owner so much he hid behind his bed, struggled to eat and constantly cried for attention at the shelter he was taken to.
Tigger spent three miserable months at Felines & Friends shelter in Santa Fe, New Mexico, despite the shelter workers’ best attempts to cheer him up. But things have finally improved for the kitty – who much prefers people to other cats – after Amy Spencer Summa adopted him for her 91 year-old mother Heidi Spencer.
Amy explained: ‘My mother is 91 years old and lives in assisted living in Santa Fe. Since the pandemic arrived last spring, she has been isolated and lonely. She has short-term memory loss, so it is hard for her to really grasp what is going on.
‘One day, after browsing through a magazine about kitty cats, she announced that she wanted a cat of her own. It took all her strength to keep this thought in her mind long enough to call and tell me this. She had always loved cats, and her assisted living facility was pet friendly, so we contacted Felines & Friends.’
Amy told the Santa Fe New Mexican that her mom and Tigger instantly hit it off. The pair now spend every day enjoying each other’s company, with Tigger given the run of Heidi’s sofa and bed.
She in turn enjoys cuddling up with the affectionate senior cat.
Amy added: ‘We are so grateful to Felines & Friends for bringing Tiger to my mother.
‘They supplied her with everything she needed to take good care of him.
‘A feline friend was exactly what she needed and I’m so glad we listened to her.’
