A couple died of Covid while holding hands and just three days before they were due to get their vaccine.
Dick and Shirley Meek, aged 89 and 87, both succumbed to the virus as they lay side-by-side in a hospital near their home in Columbus, Ohio.
They sadly died just a few minutes apart from each other on January 16, only three weeks after they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Tragically, Dick and Shirley had an appointment to get their Covid vaccine around 72 hours after they died.
Dick and Shirley leave behind a remarkable family of five children, 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
In paying tribute to their parents, sisters Debbie Howell, Vicki Harper and Kelly Meek have said they hope Dick and Shirley’s death acts as a stark warning to other about the deadly nature of coronavirus, reports WMC 5 Action News.
Kelly said her parents celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary on December 22, started feeling ill a few days later and tested positive for Covid on January 8.
‘They said to all us kids, we think we’re getting colds’, said Kelly.
The couple were admitted to the Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio on the same day they tested positive and were placed in separate rooms, one floor apart.
Their condition quickly deteriorated, said Kelly, who added that the family asked if their parents could be together during their final days.
She said: ‘We asked for them to be together, and they said, absolutely.

‘Mom passed first, they were holding hands.
‘The nurse put mom’s head on my dad’s shoulder, and she said to Dad, ‘Dick, it’s OK to let go now. Shirley’s waiting for you.’ He passed within minutes.’
John Denver’s classic ‘When the River Meets the Sea,’ was played as the couple passed, in respect to Dick’s wishes for when he died.
Kelly added: ‘My parents got the blessing of walking together through the gates of heaven into eternity with never having to face ‘until death do us part.’

‘How many people can say that? It’s beautiful.
‘Our hearts are shattered, but we are at peace knowing that they are together in heaven for eternity.’
