While the New Year celebrations at the start of January are now starting to become a distant memory for most of us, the celebrations for Chinese New Year are set to keep the party going for just a little bit longer.
This year we’ll be ushering in the Year of The Tiger – following the Year of The Ox in 2021 and the Rat in 2020.
While the day will no doubt be filled with huge celebrations in China, with plenty of unusual and exciting traditions, communities outside of the country will also be marking the day.
But just how does London celebrate Chinese New Year?
How is Chinese New Year celebrated in London?
Under normal circumstances, Chinese New Year would be marked in London with a big parade through Chinatown in the West End, as well as a Chinese New Year festival in Trafalgar Square.
However, this has been postponed for the second year in a row in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic – but that doesn’t mean the capital is completely missing out on Chinese New Year fun.
For those looking to join in the celebrations, much of the action will be moving online this year, although the exact programme has yet to be confirmed.

When is Chinese New Year 2022?

Chinese New Year falls on Tuesday, February 1 in 2022.
This date differs every year – so, for example, Chinese New Year 2021 fell on February 12.
This is because it is based on the lunisolar calendar – which is why it’s sometimes called Lunar New Year, too.
Each year, it falls between January 21 and February 20, coinciding with the relevant year’s lunar cycle.
It will be the first time since 2010 that it’s been the Year of the Tiger – with animals on a 12-year cycle according to the Chinese zodiac, including the Rooster, Rabbit, Snake, and Dragon, among others.
