A BMW driver killed her girlfriend after driving round a set of warning barriers and into the path of an oncoming train. Brittine Green, 32, has been charged with the manslaughter of her partner Rhonda Clay, 30, following Wednesday’s accident in Houston, Texas.
Green is said to have ignored the railroad crossing arms – which were in the ‘down’ position – and drove past two cars waiting in front of her to cross the tracks. Green then drove straight into the path of an oncoming Amtrak train, which struck her X3 SUV and hurled mother of one Clay out of the car to her death.
Green was lifeflighted to the Texan city’s United Memorial Medical Center, and has since been charged with her late girlfriend’s manslaughter. Harris County Sheriff’s Office listed the alleged killer’s condition as stable.
Paying tribute to Clay, her sister Cleshia Hale wrote: ‘I know we’re taught to never question God but I’m having a very hard time understanding why you!!! Y’all just welcomed in a beautiful baby girl and she’s such a fighter!!!
‘This shit just isn’t fair!!! MY GIRL IS GONE!!! Y’all please keep my family and the family of Brittine Green is your prayers!!! PULL THROUGH BRITTINE, Lovely needs you!!!! REST PEACEFULLY COUSIN
‘Life won’t be the same without you…I’m going to miss you dearly!!!! I promise to make sure baby girl knows how much you loved her and how wonderful of a mother you would’ve been!!!!’
Amtrak said the train which struck the BMW was traveling from New Orleans to Los Angeles, and that none of its passengers or crew were injured.
The train was delayed by an hour before continuing on its way. An Amtrak spokesman urged drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to heed crossing barriers, and said that around 2,000 Americans are killed in level crossing accidents each year.
