Everything was cake in 2020 so in 2021, our baked goods are going to have to try a little harder to stand out.
So if you’re looking to make something that’s a little unique and doesn’t look like the cakes of yore, this Australian baker has a recipe for you.
The chef came up with a glow-in-the-dark mudcake using black coloured buttercream icing and ‘neon dust’.
The Australian woman mixed the edible neon dust with vodka, before splattering it onto the layers of sponge.
Though it took over 24 hours for the whole look to come together, the finished product ended up looking pretty cool with its fluorescent colouring.
The baker also shared the details of the dessert on Facebook, where users were impressed with the finished look.
So if you’re planning on a blue light party or just want a new design for your next batch, this could be the recipe for you.
- Four pre-made mudcakes
- Neon dust
- Butter cream icing
- Black food colouring

- Stack cakes on top of each other (you can get store-bought or make your own), placing buttercream between each layer
- Mix black food dye with the icing (can get store bought)
- Ice the outside of the cake
- Leave for 24 hours (to allow icing colour to change from grey to black)
- Mix neon colours with vodka until desired consistency is achieved. Drip onto cake until you are happy with the effect.
The poster said it took 24 hours for the grey icing to turn black. Once this is achieved, you can go all Jackson Pollock and get colouring.

And voila, your glow-in-the-dark cake is ready for consumption.
Facebook users were impressed, saying: ‘This is so cool, great job,’ while another wrote: ‘What a great cake idea.’
A third added: ‘We need to get some of this glow in the dark stuff for our next hack.
‘You should do a full on blue light party and make everyone dress up in white, and have glow sticks everywhere.’
