On the hunt for a new summer drink?
Maybe coffee tonics aren’t for you, or perhaps you’re simply over an Aperol Spritz. Fear not, something very different is on the way.
A new beverage that’s landing next week is set to offer a twist on a classic G&T.
Something totally different (Picture: Audemus Spirits)
The savoury spirit has been designed to give a distinct umami flavour – also known as the fifth basic taste.
This unique drink has a base that comes from hand-picked capers, distilled under vacuum at 45 degrees.
After, this is combined with an infusion of parmesan cheese that’s rich in glutamate. According to the gin’s creators, Audemus Spirits, this is the molecule responsible for our tongue’s ability to taste umami.
The liquid is then combined with bergamot and juniper distillates and the blend is left to rest in an old cognac barrel for several months.
This means the end result has a lightly savoury and fresh quality, with an entirely different flavour to the gin we are all familiar with.
Miko Abouaf, founder and distiller at Audemus Spirits, said: ‘When creating Umami Gin, we wanted to make a spirit which expresses gin and juniper in a different way to what has been done classically and what people are used to trying.
‘Our mission at Audemus Spirits is to showcase spirits in new and innovative ways for people to enjoy their favourite drinks in a new light.’
The new gin will also be available at selected trading partners such as Holborn Dining Rooms, Spiritland, Publiq and Wright Bros.
