It’s good to try a twist on an old classic every once in a while.
February 22 is National Margarita Day, making for a more exciting Monday than the standard if you choose to drink this favourite cocktail.
Last year margaritas were the fifth most popular cocktail that people Googled, showing that lockdowns and restrictions haven’t stopped the nation from looking to whip one up at home.
The precise origin of the tequila-based drink is actually unknown (though it is regularly linked with Mexico), so there are various ideas about how it first came about.
Traditionally the cocktail is made up of tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice with salt on the rim of the glass.
While there are plenty of classic recipes out there to try, you might be looking to shake things up and put a spin on an old recipe.
Here are three you can try or take inspiration from, with the third being a mocktail.
Honey Pineapple Margarita

This cocktail makes use of a honey tequila base to balance the fresh, dry and earthy notes elsewhere.
If sweeter cocktails are more your thing, you’ll probably enjoy this spin.
- 30ml Cazcabel Honey
- 20ml Cazcabel Blanco
- 25ml Lime juice
- 25ml Pineapple juice
- 5ml Agave syrup
- Pineapple leaf
- Orange peel
Shake all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.
Strain into a rocks glass with ice.
Garnish with a pineapple leaf and an orange peel twist.

This recipe should taste of caramel, vanilla, and a subtle oaky flavour to stop it from tasting overly sweet.
- 50ml Speyside 7 Reposado
- 25ml lime juice
- 15ml Agave syrup
Shake all ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker.
Fine strain into a rocks glass over cubed ice.
Garnish with a wedge of lime.

Spicy Alcohol-Free Margarita
This has all the flavour despite the lack of alcohol (Picture: Fluère)
This spicy mocktail option has flavours of pear, black pepper, chilli, eucalyptus and mint.
There’s a smokiness too, making this a good one for those who like a drink with a sharp edge.
- Muddled quarter of a red chilli
- 15 ml Fresh lime juice
- 85 ml Fresh yellow bell pepper juice
- 25 ml Fluère Smoked Agave
- 15 ml Fluère Original
- 5 ml Agave Syrup
- Pinch of Salt
First cut the chilli in small parts and muddle in a cocktail shaker.
Add all other ingredients and fill the shaker to the top with ice.
Shake and fine strain in a rocks glass with ice.
Garnish with a fresh chilli pepper and a long slice of cucumber.
