SHOPPERS should start their Christmas buying earlier to help spread demand, retailers say.
The British Retail Consortium launches its “Shop early, start wrapping, enjoy Christmas” campaign today.
It fears that social distancing measures will slow things down and make late purchases more difficult.
BRC chief Helen Dickinson said: “We’re encouraging people to shop early and prevent the last-minute rush.
“This is so customers, store colleagues, warehouse workers and delivery drivers behind the scenes have the space they need to stay safe and well.”
Meanwhile, Waitrose is closing its cafés from December 13 for at least a month so that it can keep track of numbers in its stores.
Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda said their cafés would remain open, depending on restrictions.
