Before You Select a Dating Coach in Los Angeles, Know the Facts
LA By The Numbers
Many tend to think of LA as a sausage fest. They wouldn’t be entirely wrong, but to bolster the claim let’s dig into the numbers.
It’s true that in LA there are approximately 85,000 more single men than women. However, these numbers change depending on the demographic. For those ages 20-29 (i.e. the Tinder crowd) there are an extra 16 single men for every 1000 singles. That disparity stays the same when we look at those between the ages of 30-39. It’s when we get into the 40s that the turntables turn, with there being one more single woman per 1,000 singles. When we look at the 50-59-year-old age bracket we see that there are 18 more single women per 1000 singles.
While the dating prospects may look drab for youngsters, males over 40 have their choice of singles aplenty.
WalletHub’s comprehensive study on the best cities for singles in 2019 rated LA 7th out of 180 cities. Each city was ranked based on their score in three categories. That category LA ranked highest in was “dating opportunities.” This category took into account the city’s gender balance, single population, online dating opportunities, and the share of adults that own smartphones. LA also ranked 14 in the “fun & recreation” category. This category took into account the city’s number of attractions, restaurants per capita, and nightlife options per capita among other factors.
With all these entertainment options at hand, you’ll want some awesome weather to accompany your date. According to a Washington Post study, LA ranked second on a list of the cities with the most “nice” days per year coming in at 182. The study labeled a day as “nice” if the high was between 65-85, if the peak daily wind was less than 25, if there was no precipitation, and with a daily cloud coverage of less than 65.
As for major industries in La La Land, is pretty diverse. When we think of LA we think of the ritzy and glamorous movie stars. However, the arts and entertainment industry only provides about 4.4% of jobs. Other major industries include educational services (7.65%), health care & social assistance (12%), and professional scientific & technical services (8.68%).
Dating Apps In LA
Author and pub brawler Norman Mailer may have said it best when it called LA, “a constellation of plastic.” As the capital of plastic and superficiality, residents of LA absolutely love online dating.
Okay, maybe love’s a strong word, but at the very least they’re addicted.
The 24/7 virtual singles bar that is online dating is the best place to find a date in LA. Here are the best apps to help you.
Tinder named LA the 5th thirstiest city in the world. This is because Tinder users using the app’s Passport feature chose to transport themselves here more so than just about every other city in the world. LA is the third biggest tourist hub in the USA. In 2016 it welcomed in 47 million visitors. The city has been known to swell during the summer season. It’s this swell that Tinder users love to take advantage of, but it isn’t only tourists that use the app.
Tinder is well known to the younger age demographic. It was initially launched on college campuses nationwide back in 2012 and has been the preferred dating app of 18-24-year-olds ever since. During its early years, it was widely known as a hookup app and is no doubt the most hookup leaning big-time dating app on the market.
Even if you’re not into superficial short-term relationships, you should still download the app. Tinder is by far the most used dating app in the states and is the most popular in California.
It’s easy to get caught up in the superficial, drive-by romance of LA.
For those that want something real, swipe right on Bumble. Bumble is the app that Tinder users graduate to. It’s been billed as “feminist Tinder” and in fact, was created by a co-founder of Tinder. The apps look similar but there are some key differences. For one, the userbase. Bumble users tend to be more socially conscious, older, and on the prowl for a long-term relationship.
In its attempt to buck traditional gender roles, Bumble requires female users to message within 24 hours of matching. If she doesn’t the match expires. It’s this dynamic that appeals to men. Download Bumble if you’re looking for something serious in a city full of flighty, and transient singles.
Most apps are designed to keep you single forever.
They offer you an abundance of choices, highlight photos instead of bios, and don’t allow you to use user-specific filters in order to find highly compatible singles.
Hinge is the opposite. Its slogan is, “the dating app designed to be deleted.” It backs up this slogan by offering users detailed profiles, limited swipes, prompts that show off your personality and a “your turn” feature that gently reminds users to contact users that they’ve haven’t responded to in a while.
Through its “we met” feature, Hinge has received feedback that 3 out of 4 first dates that met via Hinge report wanting to see each other again.
Oh and did I mention Pete Buttigieg met his husband on the app?
The Dating Scene
You can only learn so much about the dating scene from numbers and dating apps.
To better inform our readers about dating life in LA, we reached out to dating coaches in LA and pulled from personal professional experience to give you a breakdown of what dating in LA is really like.
LA is home to the most actresses in the world. Naturally, those that work in entertainment tend to be freaking gorgeous. Pair the dense quantity of gorgeous people with the fact that LA is home to nearly 4 million people and it’s easy to see why men are always straining their heads to look at beautiful women. But it isn’t just men that are flighty. Women too feel the need to jump from one partner to the next always trying to find someone better than the last one. It’s this fear of FOMO that terminates so many relationships before they even get started.
If you’re wondering why she canceled on a Friday night, it may have nothing to do with another dude butting into the picture. The dynamism of the city means there’s always something going down. It’s possible she called a last-minute audible to hit up a new show or pop-up store.
LA is the most traffic-heavy city in the states.
In 2017 the average Angeleno spent about 5 entire days sitting in traffic. It hands down has the worst traffic in the US and is ranked 31st in the world.
Sure LA has a metro, but most people don’t use it to get around. When dating in LA it’s important that you try to find someone that lives in or around your neighborhood. Dating someone on the other side of the city or just out of town could completely change the dynamic of the relationship.
Many an LA dating coach will advise you to become a local expert. Know the ins and out of your neighborhood. Frequent the best bars, cafes, gyms, and restaurants. Becoming involved in your hyper-local community you’ll meet singles close to you who you can feasibly see multiple times a week without having to binge Radiolab on your way to a date.
Put down your phone, take a breath, and observe.
Take a moment to figure out what you want in a relationship. Stop thinking with your little head and instead let your relationship goals dictate how you behave with women instead of your lust for the next hottie that crosses your path.
Something I’d encourage men to do is evaluate how your first date went. Before skipping off to the next shiniest object, really take a moment to let your feelings about this woman seep in. If you enjoyed yourself, don’t let FOMO pry your attention away from this woman. Invest in that relationship and see where it goes.
