Speaking in a recent video, the mum said: “I decided I’d had enough of us being in debt, we were in close to $70kCAD (£42k) worth of debt.
“It was pulling us under, we did not have a good quality of life because of it, we were living paycheck to paycheck.
“Most of those paychecks went to the credit cards and loans we had just to pay off the interest.
“It got to the point where I just didn’t want to live like that any more, we weren’t being extravagant, we weren’t being frivolous we weren’t buying really big ticket items.”
Amber’s debt was made up of college and university loans as well as her husband’s car loans and personal loans.
The couple took part in a no-spend year challenge, ditching all purchases unless they were completely necessary, limiting purchases to just rent, food, car insurance and bills.
Amber explained: “We weren’t eating out, we weren’t going to the movies, we were not buying things that were not an absolute necessity.
“I didn’t go to stores or window shop I wasn’t buying anything other than food really, going grocery shopping was the highlight of my week.”
In a bid to hurry things along a little Amber also sold any possessions that she didn’t absolutely need which included the family sofa, tv and even her wedding and engagement ring.
Six years after starting the challenge the couple are now debt-free.
Amber adds: “We don’t have any credit card debt, we have paid off all our loans and we haven’t accumulated any besides our mortgage.”
