When we were young, we all probably dreamed about what our houses would look like when we were adults. You might have dreamt of having a kitchen that was filled with nothing but candy, pizza, and popcorn. You might have imagined that your living room would have the biggest TV imaginable. You might have even imagined that your hallway would have a slide and a ball pool like something from a Nickelodeon game show. Now you are older and a bit wiser, it’s highly unlikely that any of those dreams ever came true. Luckily there are still a number of ways those fun memories of your childhood can inspire how you decorate your adult home. Here are some of the ways you can bring a touch of your childhood into any room of the house.
Grab a bean bag chair
When you had lots of friends or family around, you might have all struggled for somewhere to sit. You might have had to squeeze a few extra people onto the couch than was recommended to fit everyone around your game console or the TV program you were watching. Some of your friends may have even been forced to sit on the floor. If you were lucky enough to own a beanbag, it was highly likely that everybody would be rushing to make sure they secured that seat first.
If you were lucky enough to get the beanbag chair, you could sit in whatever position you like and be ridiculously comfortable. No matter whether you wanted to sit upright to watch the TV, lay down and relax or even sit cross-legged or in another random pose, you knew whatever way you wanted to sit, you’d be comfortable. As adults, many of us feel like we need to sit in proper chairs all day, whether that be at work, at a bar, or even socializing with friends. In reality, you should be able to spend your free time in whatever chair you like. By buying a beanbag chair from a specialist beanbag maker like Fombag, you’ll be able to introduce a new comfy seat into any space. Unlike the ones you used to have as a child, these are big enough to fit any grown-up. They’re also built with high-quality fabric, meaning you won’t need to worry about sitting down too quickly on it and spraying the tiny little white balls that fill the bag everywhere like you did when you were a child. They’re an ideal chair for socializing, as you can bring it into any room when you need an extra chair for a guest.
Action figures
When we were younger, many of us would have probably been forced by our parents to put our toys away at the end of the day. Now that you’re an adult, you don’t have to listen to your parents about what you can and cannot have out in your home. If you had a particular favorite action figure growing up, why not have it out on a shelf for everybody to see? They’re a lot more attractive and will create way more conversations than any candle or decorative bowl could ever create. You could even try turning your old figures into a piece of art. For example, you could try gluing your old Spiderman action figure to a vase, so it looks like it’s climbing up your bunch of flowers. If you’ve got an action figure of someone who is naturally found flying through the skies, for example, Superman, why not try hanging them from some fishing wire from your ceiling, so they look like they’re really flying through your room?
If all of your action figures got thrown out or sold at a yard sale when you were a kid, you might be able to find the same figurines on second-hand websites like eBay. If they’re a rare and popular toy, you could end up paying even more than your parents did when it was brand new. Instead, keep an eye out in your local thrift store to see if you can pick up something similar for a much lower price.
Vintage posters
When you were a child, another rule you might have been forced to follow is to not stick anything up on the walls. Since your parents probably spent a lot of money either painting or wallpapering your room, they were reluctant to let you stick any pins or tape on it that could end up damaging the wall when you took your poster down. Nowadays, you don’t have to worry about your parents telling you off for damaging the walls, so you can put whatever you like on them. You’ll be able to find many replica prints of the most iconic posters of your childhood. Whatever film you were mad about, whether it be Star Wars, Jaws, ET, or something a lot more obscure, you’re highly likely to be able to find somewhere online that is selling a poster. If now you’ve grown up you’re also worried about damaging the walls, buy a specialist poster frame to help display your poster. When you want to change the poster, you simply just have to take down the frame and change the print in the frame before hanging it back up.
Turn your home into an arcade
One of the most exciting places to go as a child was the arcades, so why not bring a bit of the arcade into your home? You can buy full-size replicas of many of your favorite arcade machines so you can play the real thing in your home. If you don’t have the room for a full-sized game, there are also many smaller tabletop arcade machines that are installed with all the same classic games, or you could even try to build you own to fit the room. As well as the games, why not bring some of your favorite snacks from the arcades to your home? A gumball machine is a great way of adding a lot of color to a room and also a great way of keeping snacks in there as well.
