Stress: Why it is So Common and Ways to Deal With it

Nature originally designed stress to protect man against dangers and predators. Assuming you are in a mall and there is a shooter out of nowhere, stress will trigger a surge of hormones that will move you to find safety. This is called the fight or flight mechanism. 

In times of great stress, the body produces hormones like cortisol, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, manifested via different physical reactions like sweating, increased blood pressure, alertness, higher heartbeat, etc.

Even though not so deadly situations arise, the body gives the same physical reaction when there is a real threat. For instance, aggressive behavior, talking to the opposite sex, giving a speech in front of a crowd, etc., can all trigger stress. This article will explore many reasons why stress is common and natural ways to deal with it.

Reasons Why Stress is Common 

Many things around us stress us easily today. They range from work, parenting, relationship, career, etc. As a result, one needs to find a natural, reliable, and effective solution to beat stress. Money is a significant source of stress for many people and families. Most parents have to work many jobs, take care of household chores and raise their kids. Such demands can increase stress. Fear of not meeting expectations, not being there for your kids, dealing with special kids or sick kids can significantly raise one’s stress level. 

How to Deal With Stress 

Here are practical and realistic means to deal with stress:

Disconnect 

Many reputable firms give their employees a time-out every year in the form of vacation. The idea is to allow them to stay away from work, get in touch with nature, spend time with their family and get a new perspective. This is one of the tested means to beat stress and reduce cortisol – the notorious stress hormone. 

Vacation takes you away from the hustling and bustling of city life and the demands of your job. You get to connect with nature, relax and spend time on yourself and your loved ones. Your brain will also get a break from the constant demand coming from work and recharge. The American Psychological Association reveals that vacation is a powerful tool to relieve stress as it helps break the routine people are used to, alongside everything that triggers anxiety.

Remove Your Mind from the Stressor

At times, one might feel extremely tense with a significant feeling of helplessness. Such a situation might trigger helplessness, which paralyzes you from taking any meaningful action. Taking some steps back to get your act together might be the best call in such a situation. 

Here are some things one can consider doing to relax in such a situation:

  • Watch a Movie: If possible, make it a sitcom or comedy. Having a good laugh can relax your brain, calm your nerves and give you perspective. 
  • Go for a Walk: Spending time in nature can significantly alleviate stress as you get to appreciate many wonders of nature. The birds singing, trees in their majestic canopies, etc., can relax you. 
  • Take a bath: soaking yourself in a warm bath with some cool music playing underneath can relax you. You can spice this further by adding CBD oil. 

Removing yourself away from the source of stress can be an excellent way to relax. You will be better relaxed and composed to tackle whatever it is before you, rather than scrambling to get a solution.

Meditation

Stress causes the mind to go haywire, to think about one thousand and one things that can go wrong. You get sucked into the past or future with your mind fixated only on the wrong things. 

However, meditation attempts to bring one back to the moment, away from the shackles of constant thoughts. It is a valuable tool to break free from negative thoughts by either focusing on a mantra or using your breath. 

Meditation can calm your mind and reward you with incredible peace. It can be as simple as focusing on a task like washing a plate.  You can also focus on the rhythmic rising and falling action of your chest as you breathe in and out. With this, you get to escape the crowd of negative thoughts that bewilder your mind and cause stress.

Strive for a Good Work-Life Balance

Many people find it hard to disconnect from work even after leaving the work environment. The presence of mobile technology has made it more difficult for many people to separate work from personal life. As a result, many unconsciously carry their work home with them as they are filled with the urge to check their emails, even on weekends. 

Dedication at work is exemplary as it fuels your productivity. However, excessive stress and not taking some time off can produce an adverse effect, cause fatigue and trigger the opposite effect. 

As a result, it is a good idea to always leave everything work-related at the office and focus on yourself and your family. Spend time doing something that relaxes you like talking with your partner, catching up with your kids, and having a long bath. Make sure your work mail notification is switched off, so you get to focus on your family alone.
