Anyone who’s ever experienced acne knows how it blemishes your skin and self-esteem. Acne can leave its mark for years in the form of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

While some acne treatment methods may ease the process, others only worsen it. That’s why knowing how to treat post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the key to positive skin recovery.

This article covers this skin condition and some tips to heal it. Keep reading to find everything you need to know about treating post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Sunscreen

Treating post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is essential in maintaining your skin’s health and beauty. Sunscreen is one of the most effective treatments for hyperpigmentation, as the U.V. radiation from the sun’s rays can worsen the condition.

When you wear sunscreen, ensure it has an SPF of 30 or higher and is labeled as broad spectrum, as this will protect you from UVA and UVB rays. Limit your time in the sun and wear a wide-brimmed hat and clothing to cover your skin.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation is an essential step in treating post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Care should be taken when exfoliating, as overly aggressive abrasive measures may further damage the skin and increase pigmentation.

Gentle exfoliation with natural or medical-grade chemical exfoliants such as lactic or glycolic acid can help to slough off dead skin cells. This allows for lighter pigmentation to take its place.

Physical exfoliation with soft tools like muslin or soft washcloths also helps to remove the cells that contain the pigment. But it should be done cautiously, as overly aggressive exfoliation can cause inflammation. This can create a cycle that worsens the pigmentation and the skin’s overall condition.

Keeping a consistent exfoliation routine can help clear away the cells that contain the pigment. It can help even out the skin tone.

Topical Treatments

Using a combination of exfoliants and anti-inflammatory agents from trusted brands like EYURS helps. Lightening agents such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, and niacinamide work to reduce visible pigmentation. They do this by inhibiting the production of melanin.

Exfoliants such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, and urea agents help to remove the accumulated pigmentation and improve skin texture. Topical antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, such as green tea extract, licorice extract, and vitamin C, can help reduce inflammation. It can prevent the further production of melanin.

These products should be used according to the directions of your skincare specialist. They can be combined with sun protection measures, such as sunscreen and avoiding sun exposure during peak hours.

Lifestyle Changes

Limit or avoid the use of cigarettes and alcohol. This can help minimize the risk of exacerbating post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Eating healthier can also be beneficial. Consume plenty of fruits, vegetables, fiber, and foods high in antioxidants like nuts, legumes, and avocados. These simple lifestyle changes can help reduce the problem of PHI over time.

Natural Remedies

Natural remedies are a safe and effective way of treating post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Use a gentle moisturizer on the affected area and avoid products with harsh chemicals. This will help keep the skin hydrated and reduce the risk of irritation.

Applying anti-inflammatory products such as aloe vera, green tea, and turmeric can help reduce hyperpigmentation. These products contain natural antioxidants and should be applied to the affected area a few times daily.

Eating a healthy diet of fruits, veggies, and essential fatty acids may help improve the skin’s complexion.

Finally, gentle exfoliation can help reduce the appearance of dark spots and scars. Regularly using a scrub with natural agents like baking soda or oatmeal can help break up pigment on the skin’s surface.

Ablative Laser Therapy

Ablative laser therapy is an effective treatment for P.I.H. It works by targeting and removing damaged cells and replacing them with healthier ones.

The treatment is typically done with an intense pulsed light or fractional laser. Patients should expect up to 3 treatments spaced out over a few weeks to 6 months.

After treatment, patients should practice rigorous sun protection and use topical skin care products. This includes hydroquinone, tretinoin, or azelaic acid, to lighten or remove any remaining hyperpigmentation.

Keeping the affected skin moist and hydrated is also essential, as dryness can worsen P.I.H. Patients must avoid further triggers during treatment.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a dermatological procedure that can be used to improve the appearance of P.I.H. The process involves the controlled removal of the uppermost layers of the skin with a wire brush or diamond wheel. This exfoliation reduces the appearance of the discoloration caused by P.I.H.

After this procedure, a therapeutic topical cream should be applied to reduce inflammation and promote healing. It is also important to remember that dermabrasion is not a permanent cure. However, it may be a helpful tool for improving the appearance of P.I.H.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are applied to the skin to increase the cell renewal rate. After cleansing the skin, a chemical solution is applied to the affected area and is left to penetrate the skin for a few minutes, after which it is removed. As the chemical peel sloughs off the old skin, it helps to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmented areas.

Chemical peels can be used in a range of strengths depending on how severe the hyperpigmentation is. But it is important to note that chemical peels can irritate some skin types. So it is essential to be careful and follow your dermatologist’s instructions.
