Another strange year in dating is coming to an end, so it’s time for Tinder’s annual ‘Year in Swipe’ report, which shows what single people were doing and looking for the most while on the app.
While last year’s most popular emoji was the shrug – a reflection of the utter confusion and uncertainty we all faced – this year it’s the side eye (👀), used 40% more in profile bios.
Perhaps a cheeky sign of the reignition of casual sex, as bans on sleeping in other homes lifted earlier in the year, or a sign of ‘watching the drama unfold’ as Tinder put it, as questionable decisions were made amid the pandemic.
‘Members showed a mixed bag of optimism and skepticism throughout the year,’ they add.
How could you not, all things considered?
Another big trend is the importance of showing your vaccination status.
Calling a pro-vaccine status a ‘flex’, it’s clear knowing your date was on the same page about such a big and divisive issue was important to many.
‘In a year when getting vaxxed was the first thing on the date prep checklist, sharing the post-vaccine lifestyle on their Tinder bios made Gen Z feel safer to meet someone,’ the team at Tinder say.
‘And as vaccination drives accelerated locally between March and September 2021, mentions of “Vaxxed” in bios in the UK grew by 97% as members advocated for vaccine status as a dating essential.’
By far, Gen Z were the generation most likely to adopt the vaccine badge on the app.

Something else Tinder found that might surprise you, is that virtual dating is here to stay.
While first seen as a second-rate way to meet someone over lockdown, single people now appreciate the ease of having a quick video call before committing to meeting someone in person.
‘In 2021, Gen Z enjoyed both virtual meet-cutes and post-vax IRL dates. Video dates are turning into a first date staple for singletons with mentions of “video call” in Tinder bios growing by 52% globally.
‘Yet, Gen Z were also looking to connect with new people close to them for real life hangouts with “nearby” and “close by” both increasing by 20% in Tinder bio mentions globally’ Tinder adds, showing nothing compares to the real deal.
Early dating is likely to combine a combination of the two styles, especially for those with busy social schedules.

Another trend of the year was the move towards activity dates over simply going for drinks.
‘Daters are picking more interesting, unique first date activities that help them really get to know each other,’ Tinder says.
‘Tinder in the UK saw a 376% increase in mentions of Winter Wonderland in bios and requests for date activities from “pub garden” (+65%) to “picnic” (+60%) pop up in bios.
‘When asked about first date go to plans on Tinder, “a hike to a waterfall” and “a night out on the town” were both popular choices made by members in the UK.’
After a year of monotony indoors, it’s no wonder.
