Making the switch from a manual to electric toothbrush is a big decision — there are so many different options out there, and they tend to be on the pricey side. So if you’re going to splurge on upgrading your dental care routine, you want to make sure you’re going with the best possible choice.
To get the scoop on which electric toothbrushes are worth your money, I asked dentists to give me their honest recommendations. Surprisingly, one toothbrush in particular came up over and over. The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean was a favorite among the dentists I spoke with.
Dr. Courtney Hain, DDS, explained that “the DiamondClean brush is great for people with sensitive gums” because “it has a gentle setting and a pressure sensor.” She also highlighted its small, compact head that is easy to maneuver around hard-to-reach areas of the mouth.
The compact head was a selling point for Dr. Sophya Morghem, DDS, of Sunset Dentistry in San Francisco, too. She recommended Sonicare models in general, though she specifically called out the DiamondClean. “I see better results in my patients that use that brand,” she said, “less plaque and less stain.”
The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9300 Electric Toothbrush is currently available on sale on Amazon for $190. It comes in black, grey, or pink, and uses bluetooth to provide real-time feedback on your brushing via an iPhone app. Plus, as Dr. Lilya Horowitz, DDS, of Brooklyn-based Domino Dental, pointed out, it has a two-year warranty.
Other recommendations included more Philips Sonicare models, like the FlexCare Platinum and the ProtectiveClean 4100.
The Oral-B IO Series was also a popular choice. “It has a great sensor that can tell you if you are using too much or not enough pressure,” Dr. Hain said. “My favorite feature of this brush is that it alerts you when the recommended two-minute cycle is complete, but it will keep running so that you can work on any areas that need a little extra attention if desired.”
No matter which brush you choose, though, remember to stick to a thorough oral hygiene routine of brushing for two minutes twice a day and flossing.
