Do you have some wood furniture that isn’t shining very bright nowadays? If you do not regularly polish wood furniture, it will become dull and wear down in general. Polishing helps protect the wood from the elements and keeps all parts working well for the future.

It’s an easy chore to forget or put off, but if you don’t polish your furniture at least once a year it could start showing more wear and be more exposed to cracking, water damage, and more. So don’t wait, get your polish ready and start today.

Gather Your Supplies

Wood furniture is often precious, whether it’s homemade furniture or something passed down. It doesn’t require much to keep it clean and polished. You will need a few towels or rags, some gloves, and polish.

You can make your own polish at home, or buy a reputable brand. Using RUPES polisher or other options can keep your furniture looking bright and new, and you don’t have to hunt down supplies to make your own. However, check the ingredients of your polish and follow the directions.

Some polish contains dangerous chemicals, and it’s a good idea to use it in a well-ventilated area or outside.

Clean All Wood Furniture

When cleaning and polishing wood furniture, you have to start with the former. Get a clean cloth and with some warm water and dish soap, gently clean off your furniture. Be sure you don’t get it soaking, and run a damp, then dry, rag over it after.

Be thorough and fast. Wood and water don’t do well together. Water can stain the wood, or even cause it to warp in the long run.

A Proper Polishing

Once your furniture is all clean, it’s time to add a bit of sparkle and shine. Put on your gloves if you’re using anything with serious chemicals, and add some polish to a clean towel. You don’t want to add too much polish, especially if it’s waxy since you will have to rub it off after.

When you have gone over the entire piece, let it sit and soak the polish in for about 15 minutes. Then you will want to wipe it down with an unused towel to get any excess polish off. You want to be careful not to over-polish, though it is tempting.

Perfect Polished Wood Furniture

It may take you a couple of tries to get the amount of polish right. And you may want to compare homemade versus storebought polish yourself. But as long as you are regularly polishing your wood furniture, you are already helping it last longer.

Homemade furniture can be a great gift, but if it’s made of wood it does require long-term care. If you cherish any wood furniture, make sure you are aware of the last time it was polished and how it looks now.

Set it aside for a day when you polish, and give it a break while it soaks into the wood. Before you know it your furniture will be shining like new.

And if this helped you better understand how to help your wood furniture last, keep reading for more good tips.
