Read the Recipe

Before you start baking, make sure you spend time reading the recipe. Think about what you will need to bake the cake.

Try not to skip any steps in the recipe. You will end up making mistakes if you don’t follow certain procedures. Some people will skip a step, but that’s because they are experienced bakers.

As a beginner, make sure you follow the recipe.

Use Room Temperature Ingredients

Unless the recipe states otherwise, your ingredients should be at room temperature.

It’s easier to combine room temperature ingredients together compared to cold ones. Ingredients will come together in a smoother batter.

You won’t end up overmixing and causing a tough cake texture. Your cake will be a lot fluffier and lighter.

Use Butter and Full-Fat Milk

If you’re baking a cake from scratch, use real and high-quality ingredients.

If you substitute the ingredients and use fake butter or low-fat milk, your cake won’t taste as good. Treat yourself and your family by using more decadent ingredients.

Yet, if the recipe calls for a different type of ingredient, follow the recipe.

Measure the Ingredients With Care

When baking a cake, you need to make precise measurements. If you use too much sugar or flour, your cake won’t taste as good.

When measuring ingredients, you need to use the right kind of measuring tool and the correct method.

To measure flour, you’ll want to spoon the flour into the cup and use a knife to level the top. When measuring sugar, use a dry cup to scoop sugar. Make sure you level the top off.

If you need to measure brown sugar, pack the measuring cup with the back of a spoon. When you turn the cup over, the sugar should fall into the bowl and hold its shape.

Don’t Forget to Prep the Baking Pans

If you don’t prep your baking pans well, you will end up with a problem. The cake batter will end up sticking to the pan.

Before you even begin baking, prep your pans. This way, your cake batter won’t end up sitting around while you prep the pans after mixing the batter.

Grease the cake pans with shortening or butter first. Make sure you grease the corners generously.

Another option is adding some flour to the pan. You can coat the sides or the bottom of the pan. Get rid of excess flour. Try using a baking spray instead of flour or butter. Your regular cooking spray won’t work the same.

Other people will use a piece of parchment paper in the cake pan to easily lift the cakes.

Make Sure You Don’t Overmix

When you put the wet and dry ingredients together, mix them just enough to combine them. You don’t want to whip them around and around.

If you overmix the cake batter, you will end up overworking the gluten in the flour. This is why overmixed cake batter can result in a chewy and tough texture.

Mix the dry ingredients separately before you add them to the wet ingredients. This way, you will have an easier time adding them to the eggs and butter without needing to stir too much.

Stop stirring once there aren’t any dry ingredients visible.

Make Sure Cakes Have Space in the Oven

If you want to make a layer cake, you don’t want to place the layers beside one another in the oven. You’ll end up with misshapen cakes.

You might have to bake the cake layers separately.

Don’t Open the Oven Door

While your cake is baking, make sure you don’t peek at the cake. When you open the oven door, heat will escape. The overall temperature lowers.

You will have to bake your cake for a longer period. This could cause the cake to sink or collapse.

Check if the Cake Is Done

If you remove the cake from the oven too early, your cake could end up ruined. You need to pull the cake out at the right time.

To make sure the cake is cooked, you will need to insert a toothpick in the middle of the cake. Pull out the toothpick. If the toothpick doesn’t have any batter on it, then the cake is cooked.

Put the Cake Aside to Cool

You’ll want to let your cake stay in the pan for about 10-15 minutes. Leave the cake in the pan while it cools.

After the time passes, you can turn the cake pan upside down and drop the cake onto the rack. Let the cake rest for a little longer until it’s completely cool.

Once the cake is cooled off, you can begin to frost and decorate your baked good. Put your cake on a cake stand.
