THE Sister’s Russell Tovey teeters on the edge of a breakdown as he covers up a family murder in a new teaser clip.
The new spooky ITV drama starts later this month and sees Russell play Nathan, who is surprised by Bob, an unwelcome face from his past one rainy evening.
Nathan has never been able to forget the worst night of his life: a party that led to the sudden, shocking death of a young woman.
Only he and Bob (Bertie Carvel), an eccentric old acquaintance, know what really happened… and they’ve resolved to keep it that way.
But years later, Bob appears at Nathan’s door with terrifying news that threatens to tear Nathan’s world apart; the dead woman’s body is on the verge of being found, so they need to move it.
The new clip sees the pair have a tense conversation in an underpass, with Nathan insisting Bob should go away for a few days after “all the stress”.
But Bob questions how Nathan can “ignore all the evidence”, and when Nathan asks if he means a voice he thinks he heard on a blank recording, Bob replies: “We’ve got to move her”.
Nathan – who appears to now be married to the dead girl’s sister – disagrees and said: “All we have to do is leave her be and leave her where she is.”
As the police work near the area of the dead body, Nathan adds: “Even if they did find her, and it’s a big if, it’s been so long, it’s been years.”
But Bob shuts him down as he tells him: “She’s haunting me Nathan. I woke up two days ago and she was standing there at the foot of my bed, her mouth was moving.”
Nathan’s silence leads Bob to claim he must have seen her too, but Nathan says: “I haven’t seen her, because there’s nothing to see, she’s gone Bob. She doesn’t exist.”
Changing his approach, Bob tells him: “Look, I understand I really do, it’s difficult to face and it’s easier to pretend it’s not happening but it’s happening, she won’t go away, she won’t leave us alone, not until we put it right.”
The scene ends with Nathan telling Bob to put things right himself, but Bob cries out that he’s scared and can’t do it alone.
The four-part series is written by Luthor writer Neil Cross and is inspired by the novel Burial, which he also wrote.
The Sister begins on October 26 on ITV and airs across four consecutive nights.
