Warning: spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian season 2 episode 3.
At the very end of the first season of The Mandalorian, viewers were granted a brief glimpse of the Darksaber being wielded by the sinister Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito).
We weren’t told how the former officer in the Galactic Empire’s Imperial Security Bureau came to be in the possession of the powerful weapon… but there’s a chance we could find out in season 2.
During Chapter 11 of The Mandalorian, which was released on Disney Plus on Friday 13 November, Mandalorian warrior Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) seeks out the Darksaber, boarding an imperial freighter in order to do so.
While she doesn’t find the Darksaber on the ship, it’s implied that the weapon is still in the hands of Moff, who hasn’t yet made an appearance in the new series.
So what is the Darksaber and what is its significance?
To the naked eye, the Darksaber simply looks like a lightsaber that, instead of emitting a bright colour such as red or green, is black.
However, the Darksaber is a valuable historical artefact, in addition to being of extreme significance for Mandalorians.

The Darksaber was created by a Mandalorian called Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian to be inducted into the Jedi Order.
After Tarre died, the black-bladed lightsaber was kept in the Jedi Temple.
However, when the Old Republic fell, Tarre’s descendants decided the weapon was theirs to claim, using it to gain power and rule over Mandalore, the homeworld of the Mandalorians.
The Darksaber was first seen in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, before also appearing in the series Star Wars Rebels.
In addition to being shorter than traditional lightsabers and flat-bladed like a sword, the Darksaber is said to be so powerful that it can ward off a blow from a lightsaber.
Considering the important, historical value the Darksaber has among Mandalorians, perhaps we’ll see Bo-Katan or even Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) fight Moff for ownership of the weapon.
For now, we just can’t wait to hopefully meet Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) in the series very soon.
Season 1 and the first three episodes of season 2 of The Mandalorian are available to watch on Disney Plus. New episodes are released on Fridays.
