The special, which is released on Friday December 18, sees the trio travel across the challenging roads of the East African nation in search of pirate gold.
However, May recalled the harrowing moment he, his co-hosts and the show’s crew witnessed a woman walking through a small village with her wrists bound by wooden stocks.
Troubled by what he saw, he explained that no one could give them context as to why the woman was forced into the medieval torture device, which hasn’t been used in the UK as a form of punishment since 18th Century.
“I didn’t learn anything shocking about Madagascar,” he said.

“Apart from the woman in the stocks, we still don’t quite know what that was about.
“That was disturbing,” May continued. “Nobody we were with could explain to us what that was.
“It didn’t seem to be a stunt or a carnival ritual or any of those sorts of things, it did actually genuinely seem to be a woman in some sort of stocks.”
While the stocks haven’t been officially used as punishment in the UK for many centuries, it appeared the Madagascan woman had been subjected to a form of public humiliation.
Weighing in on the historic use of stocks, James added: “I think we got it over in England, and we can be a bit backward, but I don’t know the last time we put someone in the stocks.”
The Grand Tour: A Massive Hunt is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video from Friday, December 18.
