The award-winning show follows the history of the royal family, starting with Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the throne.
The new season – its fourth – brings us closer to modern day history, and one of the most infamous chapters in the monarchy’s history: Diana.
The new season will introduce Diana, Princess of Wales (played by actress Emma Corrin) to the fold – from how she met Charles as Diana Spencer, born into British nobility and close acquaintance to the Royal Family to their tumultuous marriage.
Long before they tied the knot – the two celebrated 15 years of wedded bliss together this April – Camilla Parker Bowles, who is now married to Charles, was always a presence in the Prince’s life.
But why did Charles end up not marrying Camilla initially?

Though nothing has ever been confirmed by either party, historians and sources close to the royals have previously suggested that a mixture of timing and influence by family members initially kept Charles and Camilla apart.
For a start, after Prince Charles first met Camilla Shand – her maiden name – he was scheduled to leave with the Royal Navy not long after.
It’s said that the two met up frequently at polo matches and later snuck secret time away at Broadlands, the estate belonging to his uncle Lord Mountbatten, but Prince Charles was scheduled to leave on the HMS Frigate at the beginning of 1973.
Following his departure Camilla reconnected with her on-off longtime suitor, Andrew Parker Bowles.

Andrew proposed to his long-time girlfriend in March 1973, when Prince Charles was thousands of miles away in the West Indies, and they got married in 1974.
Another often-cited theory suggests that the Royal Family had their own intentions for Charles.
Historian Carolly Erickson wrote in Lilibet: An Intimate Portrait of Elizabeth II that the Queen Mother pushed her grandson toward the granddaughters of her close friend and lady-in-waiting, Lady Ruth Fermoy.
This is how Prince Charles started dating Lady Sarah Spencer in 1977.
After dating her older sister, Charles began dating Lady Diana Spencer in 1980 and married the following year.
On July 29, 1981, nearly one billion viewers in 74 countries tuned in to watch the royal wedding.
The couple would separate in 1992, and legally divorce in 1996, one year before Diana’s tragic death by car accident on August 31, 1997.
