The pair took on this season’s first Couple’s Choice seeing them dance a contemporary routine to the Years & Years song, Shine.
The category allows the dancer to perform a personal story, seeing Nicola reflect on her boxing career.
In a VT before she took to the dancefloor, the 38-year-old said: ‘I want people to be able to see the story in the dance of what I went through and how I have become the person that I am today.’
‘I’m from Leeds from a council estate,’ she pressed. ‘I first started boxing by accident.
‘My mum couldn’t get a baby sitter one night for me and my brother, and she took us down to an after school boxing class and I absolutely loved it.
‘After I finished school I wanted to further my boxing career and that’s when I came across Haringey Boxing Club.

‘I just packed my stuff said “bye” and moved down to London. It brings back a lot of memories being here.’
Nicola then recalled how winning the London Olympic Games was one of the best moments in her life, calling it a ‘dream come true’.
‘I was told many times that women’s boxing isn’t a career, “you should get a real job,”‘ she said. ‘Boxing definitely did help with my confidence and helping me be who I want to be.
‘I think it’s very important to look at yourself in the mirror and be happy with who you are. When you have that self-belief it just gives you that drive to achieve your goals.’

Following their routine, host Claudia Winkleman asked Nicola if she wanted to say anything to those who supported her throughout her career.
‘I just like to say thank you to everyone that has supported me on my journey – I came to London with a backpack and that’s all I had and they were…’ she said before getting emotional.
Tapping her chest, Nicola pressed on: ‘Supportive enough to believe in my dream.’
Fans were quick to take to Twitter where they praised the pair for their ‘incredible’ routine.
‘Every time #NicolaandKatya dance I get a bit tearful such great chemistry #Strictly,’ one wrote while another said: ‘Katya’s played this pairing so well. Excellent choreography.’
Someone else added: ‘I’ve no idea if that was technically what was required but emotionally and entertainingly wonderful from Nicola. Katja’s choreography was top notch, as per.’
Strictly Come Dancing continues tomorrow night on BBC One.
