Michael Sheen was overcome with emotion as he recalled his emotional tribute to Port Talbot, Wales, in tonight’s episode of Jennifer Saunders’ Memory Lane.
The Hollywood star revisited the spot in his hometown where he gave a 72-hour performance of The Passion in 2011, which ended with him nailed to the cross for the crucifixion scene.
Holding back tears, Michael was clearly moved as he recounted the project.
‘My character was a teacher who came from the town who had a breakdown and had lost his memory,’ Michael told Jennifer. ‘And when I was crucified, the idea was suddenly the ground opened up and what came out of it was the memories of the town.
‘We had this 60ft spray of water behind the cross and projected onto that, were films that I had collected of home videos and events of the past.’
‘I feel a little bit wobbly,’ Jennifer said, also visibly moved by the tale.

‘As I was on the cross, my own mum and dad’s wedding was on there,’ Michael revealed, causing him to choke up.
‘Over the years of developing it, I’d kept the list of everyone I’d heard of who’d died and things that used to be put on in the town that weren’t put on anymore,’ he continued.

‘I learnt as much of it as I possibly could and when I was on the cross I said a list of all the things that had been lost and that was what was coming out of the ground.
‘It was incredibly emotional.’
Michael added that his involvement in The Passion changed his life in all kinds of ways and ignited a new relationship with Port Talbot.
‘I remember thinking I will never do anything as meaningful in my life again and I’m happy with that,’ he concluded.
‘That will be the greatest thing I ever manage to do in my life in my career.’
Jennifer Saunders’ Memory Lane is available for catch-up on the ITV Hub.
