Luther series 6 isn’t happening (Picture: BBC)
Idris Elba’s Luther won’t be returning for a series six, creator Neil Cross has confirmed.
The BBC thriller catapulted Elba, who starred as the titular detective DCI John Luther, into new levels of fame and gradually became a global smash, making waves on both sides of the Atlantic.
After almost two years since that season 5 finale, Cross confirmed there will be no more televised episodes of Luther but teased there’s a special announcement coming soon amid speculation of a spin-off movie.
‘There is not going to be a season six — definitively no season six,’ he told Australia’s Insider magazine.
‘But Idris, [director] Jamie Payne, and I will shortly have some exciting news to share,’ he stressed.
‘There’s gonna be more later, but it’s not going to be season six.’
There’s special Luther news incoming soon
The latest comes after Cross hinted at big plans for Luther last month.
Speaking to The Sunday Post, he said: ‘All I can say, I’m afraid, is there will be an announcement soon.
‘Idris and I are both really excited and neither of us can wait for the announcement to come so we can properly talk about it, as we love the show so much, but something big is coming.’
something big is coming
Elba, who starred as Luther for five runs, has continually expressed interest in supersizing the series for a big screen movie.
‘With film, the sky is the limit,’ he said at the 2018 Bafta TV awards.
‘You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines, and a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale.
‘But John Luther is always going to be John Luther.’
Luther is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
