The political advisor was rushed to hospital in March this year with coronavirus, where he was placed into a medically induced coma to help his body fight off the disease.
However, while the father-of-two is currently free from Covid-19, the virus has wreaked havoc on his body, leaving him with a hole in his heart, kidney failure as well as him now being diabetic after complications with his pancreas.
The tragic story has been publicised throughout various news outlets across the past six months, seeing Prince William reach out to Kate ahead of tomorrow night’s Pride of Britain Awards.
Chatting to the Daily Mirror, the Good Morning Britain presenter recalled talking with Prince William about Derek, and how she was left emotional when thinking about his mother Princess Diana’s death
‘I thought about him losing his mum…’ she explained to the publication. ‘At least we still have my Derek. As I was talking about [her children] Darcey and Billy not being able to see their dad, I was thinking, “Well, William doesn’t have his mum”.

‘It makes me tearful. William knows more than anyone what it is like to not have a parent.’
Kate then spoke about meeting Kate Middleton and how the Duchess of Cambridge asked about her children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, who she shares with Derek.
‘They knew everything happening with Derek,’ she pressed. ‘They were very genuinely concerned.

‘There is something lovely thinking that not just the royals but people all around care. Whether it be them or the man in the shop who said, “I’m praying for you”, it does give you strength.’
She confirmed that both Darcey and Billy were coping brilliantly, calling them her heroes.
It comes after Kate revealed her hubby’s recent heartbreaking breakthrough where he whispered his first word over FaceTime since being hospitalised.
To stop him from seizing up, doctors have been manipulating his body, and while Kate watched on he mouthed the word ‘pain’.
The mum-of-two recalled how she burst into tears when finding out what he had said as she called it ‘heart-wrenching’ to see, but still a ‘huge breakthrough’.
The Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards air tomorrow on ITV at 9pm.
