Before the coronavirus pandemic restricted travel and production, Kaley spent some time in Rome, during which time she and some other members of the cast went to a nightclub for a night out.
While taking part in a recent virtual interview for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Kaley explained that on the night in question, she was emulating some of the characteristics of Cassie, the protagonist she plays on The Flight Attendant.
‘My character Cassie’s kind of a hot mess, a fun hot mess, loves to drink, loves to party. So one night in Rome, me and the cast decided to go out and be like one of the locals,’ the actor said.
‘We were with a couple of guys who lived in Rome and knew the town so they brought us to this amazing club, very small club – again, locals, like no tourists.’
Kaley described the club as being so small, everyone inside was ‘packed like sardines’, adding: ‘I’d never been to anything like this before.’
When she entered the club, the first thing she noticed were ‘open candelabras’, which she compared to the ones from Disney’s Beauty in the Beast.
While she initially thought, ‘That’s got to be a little dangerous’, she let the thought escape her mind, ordering more shots for her and her friends.
However, while Kaley was sitting at the bar with one of her friends, she started to smell smoke, not realising that her hair had caught on fire.
‘I look around and I’m like, ‘Do you smell that?’ I see her motion that it’s me,’ Kaley said.

At that point, the actor noticed a man coming from behind her, under the impression that he was attacking her, while also hearing people in the club chanting the word ‘Fuoco’, which means fire in Italian.
However, Kaley mistakenly thought they were shouting her surname ‘Cuoco’ at first, assuming that they had all recognised her while still unaware that her hair was on fire.
‘Finally I realise it’s my hair. I thought they were telling me I’m on fire, like, ‘Hey baby, you’re on fire.’ My hair had completely caught on fire,’ the actor told Jimmy as the talk show host smiled in response.
‘This man who I thought was attacking me in a club in Rome was actually saving my life.’
Afterwards, Kaley said that she was jokingly nicknamed ‘Fuoco’ on set of The Flight Attendant, which she is executive producing as well as starring.
‘It was pretty insane,’ she concluded. You don’t say!
The Flight Attendant is set to premiere HBO Max in the US on 26 November.
