Sir Ian McKellen has heaped praise on Russell T Davies for his latest drama It’s A Sin.
The Lord Of The Rings actor is one of the show’s many fans and hailed the ‘imaginative’ showrunner for creating the new Channel 4 series, which explores the lives of young men living in London during the HIV/Aids crisis.
Taking to Twitter to share his delight in the five-part show, Sir Ian wrote: ‘Russell T Davies must be the most imaginative of writers for television.
‘His latest series reveals that he cares for the audience as much as he loves his characters. He’ll make you sad but lift your heart.
‘#ItsASin will entrance young viewers, whatever their sexuality.’

Davies has revealed that It’s A Sin is semi-autobiographical and that some of the characters were based on people that he knew as he grew up.
He’s spoken about how Colin was based loosely on an ex-boyfriend, and Jill – the show’s leading lady – is based on one of his close friends, Jill Nalder, who appears in the series as the mum of her on-screen counterpart.
Davies also chose to cast LGBTQ+ actors in It’s A Sin to ‘create a safe space where gay actors could voluntarily come in and be themselves’.
He added: ‘I think it’s created a genuine vibe for want of a better word.’
It’s A Sin continues on Friday at 9pm on Channel 4 with the boxset available to stream on All4.
