Grey’s showrunner Krista Vernoff explained they decided to bring McDreamy back to provide “pure joy” for its fans during what has been a tough year.
“The most important task we had this season was to honor the reality of this global pandemic and the impact it’s having —particularly on healthcare workers,” she told Hollywood Reporter.

“Along with that we had to come up with creative ways to allow our show to still be fun and romantic and provide some escapism. Enter Patrick Dempsey.
“The beach motif — which will continue beyond the premiere — provided a way for us to live outside the pandemic even for a little while here and there.
“And Derek’s return provided pure joy for us, for Meredith, and for the fans.”

Vernoff and Pompeo also opened up about the “Herculean” task of getting the 17th season filmed during the coronavirus pandemic.
“Our effort is nothing compared to the work of our frontline healthcare workers to whom this season is dedicated,” Vernoff said.

“We hope our show inspires you to wear your masks to protect them and each other. As Derek Shepherd would say, ‘It’s a beautiful day to save lives.'”
Pompeo added: “In a strange way, the behind the scenes of the show is certainly paralleling what we need, with the stories that we put out. What do we love about the show? We love that the show brings people together.P
“We love that the show hopefully opens people’s minds, it opens people’s hearts, and I think that, in the running of the show and the making of the show, if we follow those same principles, if we follow the principles of love first, of acceptance, of open mind, open heart, forgiveness, all of it is, that’s the message of Grey’s.”
