A newly-released trailer for the upcoming Downton Abbey film hints heavily at a yet-to-be-revealed mystery in the Dowager Countess’s past.
Downton Abbey: A New Era, sees the aristocratic family head to France, where Dame Maggie Smith’s character has been left a villa in the south of the country as a gift.
Dame Maggie, along with other key characters and fan favorites, make the trek to France in the new film.
Partly for a holiday, partly to escape the film crew which has been set up in their home, and partly to find out who exactly left a villa to the countess – and who he was to her.
Written by Julian Fellows, the film sees cast, crew and various stars overtake Downton to film a ‘moving picture’, much to the distaste of Hugh Bonneville’s character Robert Crawley.
He remarks in the new trailer: ‘I think it’s a horrible idea, actresses plastered in make-up and actors just plastered.’

Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley, tells the family that she inherited a villa from a man, whose describes only as having spent some days with years prior.
The family, including Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary, set out to discover the Dowager Countess’ ‘mysterious past’ in France, and identify the man who gifted her the villa.
The trailer also shows the Dowager Countess warning Lady Mary: ‘Women like us fall into two categories: dragons and fools.
‘You must make sure they think of you as a dragon…’
The upcoming film is directed by Simon Curtis, whose other credits include My Week With Marilyn, Goodbye Christopher Robin and David Copperfield.

Hit ITV series Downton Abbey, which detailed the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in their fictional country estate, aired its final episode in 2015.
However, to fans’ relief it was far from the end: the first feature-length film was released in 2019, and the sequel will hit cinemas this spring.
Downton Abbey: A New Era will be released in cinemas in the UK in April.
