Cobra Kai pays homage to classic Friends gag (Picture: Splash/NBC)
The show pays homage to one of the most-loved jokes from the classic sitcom in a wonderfully subtle way – but did you spot it?
It happens during a scene in which William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence and Xolo Maridueña’s Miguel Diaz eat sushi together, pointing out that they’re eating ‘unagi’.
It is, of course, a reference to the famous moment from a season six episode of Friends which sees Ross discuss the concept of ‘unagi’ – supposedly a state of total awareness from the martial art of Karate.
Rachel and Phoebe, however, are quick to point out that ‘unagi’ is in fact the Japanese word for freshwater eel.
It’s one of the classic Friends moments, with the trio spending the rest of the episode trying to scare the living daylights out of each other. As fans will know, it’s not something you are, it’s something you have…

Fans have been spotting the subtle reference and sharing their delight at the in-joke on social media.
‘Be honest y’all thought of Ross when you watched this bit didn’t you,’ one wrote.
It comes days after Rowan Atkinson spoke about another classic Friends gag, the Thanksgiving – although while Cobra Kai was paying homage to the classic sitcom, Rowan claimed that Friends had actually stolen the joke from Mr Bean.
Meanwhile, it was recently announced that Cobra Kai has KO’ed the competition with season 3 and has become one of Netflix’s most popular returning series ever.
Cobra Kai and Friends are both available to watch on Netflix
