In 2012, Alesha, 42, announced that she was leaving Strictly after appearing as a judge for three years.
The singer won the show five years prior, raising the Glitterball Trophy alongside her dance partner Matthew Cutler.
While Alesha went on to become a judge on BGT – a role she has maintained to this day – on Christmas Day 2020 she made a special appearance on the Strictly festive special, taking a fond look back at her experience in the competition.
After watching a clip of herself and Matthew dancing a Cha-Cha to Crazy In Love on Strictly in 2007, Alesha said she felt ‘so happy’ when that particular routine came to an end.
‘I felt alive, I felt energised and just the mood and the atmosphere in the room was just incredible. It was electric,’ she said.
Alesha stressed that winning Strictly was not only a monumental achievement, but also a ‘life-changing’ feat.
‘Winning Strictly Come Dancing changed my life,’ she said.
‘It came into my life at a time when I needed a lift, I needed something positive, and it really, really was the tonic that I needed.’
On the rare experience of being both a Strictly contestant and a judge, Alesha admitted that it was ‘definitely better’ being on the judges panel.
‘It’s definitely better to be the judge than to stand there and be judged,’ she joked with a huge laugh.
While Alesha has gone on to sit on the BGT judges table, she doesn’t play down the impact Strictly had on her life beforehand.
‘For about five years Strictly Come Dancing was a huge part of my life and it was just a wonderful experience that I will hold dear to me for the rest of my life,’ she stated.
The Strictly Come Dancing special will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
